Mitchum Qualifies 4 Cars for Opening Round of Continental Tire Series

Daytona Beach, FL (January 26, 2012)
The opening round of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge will feature no less than four Mitchum Motorsports cars. Two ST class BMWs and two GS class Camaros will take the green flag Friday afternoon at Daytona International Speedway.

Mitchum Camaro Grabs 3rd Row Starting Position

The #62 Camaro grabbed a 3rd row starting spot in the cautioned shortened qualifying session this afternoon. Gunter Schaldach managed a clean lap during the limited green flag time, posting the 6th quickest time of the session. Joey Atterbury will share the car with Schaldach on Friday, taking over halfway through the race.

Unfortunately the #6 Camaro was not as lucky in terms of getting a clean qualifying lap. The time posted puts them 34th on the grid. Aaron Steele handled the qualifying and will be sharing the car with Tim Bell, who will drive the latter half of the race for Mitchum Motorsports.

New Mitchum BMWs Qualify at Daytona

Mitchum Motorsports added two ST class BMWs to its program during the offseason and debuts them here at Daytona. The #60 car, driven by Kevin Gleason and Robert Stout, qualified 14th. Gleason ran hard throughout the 15 minute session and will start the race Friday. The #63 car qualified 30th with Johnny Kanavas behind the wheel. He’ll share the car with co-driver Sarah Cattaneo.

“I am pleased with the 3rd row starting position for the #62. The car was fast and we may have been even higher up if not for the very limited track time during qualifying. The #6 car had some bad luck with how the cautions fell and didn’t really get a chance to show its true speed,” said team principal Chris Mitchum. “It’s a long race so we have plenty of time to move up through the field.”

“We only picked up the BMWs a few weeks ago so the qualifying times they posted are pretty good considering we haven’t had time to fully sort the cars out,” continued Mitchum. “We want to drive a smart race in these cars and head back to the shop and really get the cars up to speed before the second round of the championship.”
